Truly Humbled
During our nearly 10 years of operation, I have been the recipient of many heartfelt messages applauding me for my fine work in assisting our less fortunate veterans suffering food insecurity. For that, I am humbled and grateful. But, I must confess the true heroes are the Vittles’ volunteers who dedicate their time and energy, not for recognition or kudos, but solely for the improvement of our at-risk veterans’ situations.
I am taking this opportunity to give them recognition they so richly deserve, to volunteers both past and present, for their contribution to the Vittles for Vets program: Mrs. Betty Whiteman, David & Donna Salmons, Lin Martin, Kory Branch, Tammy Roop, Paul “Peppy” Platt (recently deceased), Sonya Edens, Marie Rorrer, Mark Teer, Scott Patrick, Lee & Mike Wolfe, Reg Crocket, Jane Irvine, Joanne Yousten, Troy Long, Laken & Jay Smith (Gearheads for a Cause), Lee Ensley, Gary Powers, January Gerow & Sandra McCann.
Lastly, I thank the students at VCOM who deliver food pantry items monthly from St. Francis Food Bank in Roanoke, four years running, to our veterans in Roanoke & Salem.
Without the support, dedication and hard work of all mentioned above, and any I may have missed, this charity would cease to exist.
That being said, I gratefully and humbly accept all accolades on behalf of my favorite people—the Vittles’ Volunteers.
Thank you and God bless. Bill McCann
